Latvia builds 36 km of fence at Belarus border
February 5, BPN. Latvia has covered with a fence over 36 kilometers of its shared border with Belarus by late January, Delfi reported.
Latvia started building the 173-km long border fence in August 2022, planning to complete the first construction phase by spring 2023, and the second phase, by early spring 2024.
Lithuania completed constructing a physical barrier on its border with Belarus in late August 2022, and Poland, in early October 2022.
The construction of the fence was one of the measures to resolve the migration crisis on the Belarus-EU border which dates back to the spring of 2021. It escalated on November 8, 2021 when thousands of migrants set up a camp near the Polish border. The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.
