Babaryka’s team confirms ex-presidential hopeful’s hospitalization
April 27, BPN. The jailed former presidential hopeful, Viktar Babaryka, was hospitalized in the early hours of April 25, his team confirmed on Telegram.
Babaryka’s associates said they did not have any information about the incident that occurred at Penal Colony No. 1 in Navapołack, Viciebsk region.
In the evening of April 26, Rabočy Ruch, a worker rights group, reported the politician’s hospitalization with signs of beating and a collapsed lung. His health condition was reportedly serious but stable.
The Viasna Human Rights Center told BPN that it had no recent updates about Babaryka and his son Eduard who has been in pre-trial detention for over two years pending investigation.
Viktar Babaryka is currently serving a 14-year prison term on charges widely seen as politically motivated. The prison administration reportedly has put him under intensive pressure recently. In March, it reprimanded him and applied “unjustified disciplinary action,” his team said.
