Belarusian nuclear plant’s Unit 2 starts producing electricity

May 13, BPN. Unit 2 of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) has been connected to the grid and started producing electricity, the energy ministry’s press office reports.

The reactor was synchronized with the turbine generator after reaching the minimum-controlled power level. Technological systems and equipment will be extensively tested after a step-by-step capacity increase, the ministry said.

The Belarusian NPP is located near Astraviec, Hrodna region, some 10 miles away from the Lithuanian border. Designed by Russia’s Rosatom, it has also been built with a Russian loan. Lithuania views the plant as unsafe and describes it as a “geopolitical weapon.”

Pilot operation of Unit 1 started in November 2020, and commercial operation, in June 2021. Authorities plan put Unit 2 into commercial operation in October.
