Prominent activist Žalapaŭ dies aged 73

May 15, BPN. Chrystafor Žalapaŭ, a prominent activist and politician from Viciebsk, has а died after a long illness, a few days before his 74th birthday.

Žalapaŭ was a member of the the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF) governing body and the council of the outlawed Movement for Freedom. He also led Viciebsk’s organization Self-Government and Society.

Žalapaŭ ran for parliament, organized awards and events in honor of writer Vasil Bykaŭ, and staged an individual prayer event for protest victims in 2020.

He was praised by his allies as a generator of ideas, a creator and a mover of numerous public initiatives in Viciebsk.
