Cichanoŭskaja calls for Łukašenka’s “global impeachment” at UN

May 26, BPN. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has urged the UN General Assembly to give Alaksandr Łukašenka a vote of “global impeachment” by turning down Minsk’s bid for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council.

Belarus applied for one of the five non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council in 2024-2025. The voting will take place at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in June 2023.

Speaking at the Kyiv Security Forum, Cichanoŭskaja called for the complete political isolation of the Belarusian regime and tougher sanctions, denouncing ongoing discussions of easing restrictions on Belarusian potash fertilizers. She described Belarus’ fertilizer exports as a major source of revenue for financing the political crackdown and complicity in Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Cichanoŭskaja also expressed her full support for Ukraine’s NATO membership aspirations and a peace plan proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
