Ukraine’s security services arrest Belarusian KGB spy

June 2, BPN. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) says it has arrested an agent of the Belarusian Committee for State Security (KGB) as he tried to pass intelligence information to the Belarusian side.

The suspect is a Belarusian national who resided in Ukraine’s Rivne region. In the past he had served as commander of the paratroopers and participated in the Soviet-Afghanistan war.

The KGB reportedly recruited him at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 to collect data on the defense of Ukraine’s northern borders and track the routes of military equipment movements. Since then, he carried out reconnaissance and subversive activities against Ukraine, the SBU said.

In November 2022, another man who said he worked for the Belarusian secret services surrendered to the Ukrainian army during a counterattack in the Kharkiv region. His name and details of his work for the Belarusian special services were not disclosed.

On April 4, KGB chief Ivan Tertel boasted of arrests of dozens of Ukrainians in Belarus for “terrorist attempts, reconnaissance and espionage activities.”
