Education officials to recalculate language test scores after public outcry

June 2, BPN. Officials will recalculate language test scores using a simpler method on the instructions of Alaksandr Łukašenka, the Pul Pervogo Telegram channel reports, quoting Education Minister Andrej Ivaniec.

This year, the education ministry introduced standardized tests for high school graduates, arguing that it would help students show their objective level of knowledge.

But many students and parents were outraged when the results of the language test were announced last week, claiming they were lower than expected and the scoring system was flawed.

Ivaniec dismissed the allegations of injustice and accused critics of spreading “fake news.”

But Łukašenka lashed out at officials for using a complicated digital method instead of “establishing a regular, comprehensive system.” The education ministry eventually announced that it would set up a commission to investigate the scoring process.

Ivaniec said today that the investigation had found no wrongdoing, adding that the method was beyond the understanding of the common folk.

Opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja said Łukašenka intervened only to demonstrate that “the king is good and the nobles are bad.”
