Authorities add 66 to extremism list amid human rights concerns
June 23, BPN. Belarusian authorities have added 66 names to the list of “persons involved in extremist activities,” as human rights groups accuse the state of using anti-extremism laws to silence dissent.
The new additions include Andrej Pačobut, a jailed journalist and Polish minority activist.
They also include Pavieł Biełavus, the founder and owner of an online store selling Belarusian-themed goods. He was jailed for high treason and other alleged crimes.
Lawyer Vital Brahiniec was convicted of founding an extremist group. He represented the interests of Aleś Bialacki, a prominent human rights activist.
Aleh Švajko, a children’s soccer coach, was sentenced for public order offenses.
Uładzimir Bułaŭski, Viсiebsk’s art-manager and musician, was convicted of violating the procedure for holding mass events.
Belarusian human rights groups declared all of the above political prisoners.
The extremism list now has 2,967 entries.
