Lednik’s death proves inhuman dimension of oppression – EU spokesman
February 21, Pozirk. “The tragic death of Ihar Lednik in prison proves inhuman dimension of [Alaksandar] Łukašenka’s oppression,” said Peter Stano, lead spokesman for the European Union’s External Affairs Service, on X.
Noting that Belarus’ political prisoners are ill-treated and deprived of medical care, he pointed out that the regime will be held accountable for the deaths of opponents in prisons.
German MP Robin Wagener, leader of the Group for a Democratic Belarus, also reacted to the news, demanding the release of political prisoners.
Lednik, an activist of the now defunct Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada), died in prison hospital of heart failure at 63.
