Propagandists prevent Sokurov’s screening in Minsk

March 12, Pozirk. Minsk’s Falcon Club cinema has cancelled the screenings of The Sun and Fairy Tale movies by Russian filmmaker Alexander Sokurov scheduled for March 11-13.
The Falcon Club cited technical reasons on its Facebook page, but Russia’s RBC reported that two government propaganda officers vehemently opposed Sokurov’s visit to Belarus.
Vadzim Hihin, who was recently awarded a seat at the House of Representatives, confirmed to RBC that Belarusian propaganda machine had been “working” to prevent the visit, while Ryhor Azaronak claimed that “the patriotic public” was strongly against it.
Sokurov, 72, a prominent Russian filmmaker whose filmography includes more than 50 movies and documentaries, has criticized the Kremlin over Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and full-scale war on Ukraine in 2022.
In a comment to RBC, the director criticized the Belarusian culture ministry for not allowing local young cinematographers to see his works.
