Trial opens in Minsk for journalist accused of extremist group membership

March 19, Pozirk. The Minsk City Court has started hearing a case against journalist Ihar Karniej, the electronic court schedule says.

Judge Siarhiej Kacar presides over the proceedings. Since 2020, Kacar has handed down about 170 politically-motivated rulings under the Administrative Offenses Code and about 30, under the Criminal Code, according to human rights groups. 

Investigators accused Karniej of joining an extremist group. He may face up to six years in prison if convicted.

Karniej, a former RFE/RL Belarus Service correspondent, has been in custody since July 2023.
