Lithuanian official denies report that Vilnius deporting Belarusian journalist

April 1, Pozirk. Lithuanian migration authorities will consider the residence permit application by Aleh Barščeŭski, a prominent Belarusian journalist, within three months, BNS reported, citing the migration department’s head, Evelina Gudzinskaitė.
He may be granted an extension of his residence permit because his children are Lithuanian residents, she said.
The official denied reports of Barščeŭski’s deportation disseminated by Naš Dom, an NGO associated with the journalist’s wife Volha Karač.
Barščeŭski, a former editor of the independent newspaper, failed to apply for a residence permit extension because he was hoping to obtain asylum, Gudzinskaitė said.
Migration authorities have not launched deportation procedures after assessing the risks, as they do in cases involving Belarusian nationals, she noted.
In August, BNS reported that Lithuania had turned down Karač’s request for political asylum based on alleged links with Russian intelligence services.
Karač, whom the Belarusian secret service accused of terrorism in 2021, denied cooperating with any “hostile agencies” in Minsk or Moscow.
