Speaker hopes tens of thousands to elect new opposition council
April 2, Pozirk. Andrej Jahoraŭ, speaker at the opposition Coordination Council, hopes that tens of thousands of people will cast their votes for new councilors online in late May.
The vote is significant because new members could influence the Belarusian democratic forces’ current policies, Jahoraŭ told a news conference.
If candidates are active, the number of voters could exceed 50,000, he estimated.
“This could be the first election of an exiled representative body in the world’s history to be held completely online,” he said.
The voting platform would be launched by Pavieł Libier and his IT team.
Libier told the conference that it would be fully decentralized and protected from hacks.
Belarusians could vote inside and outside the country, he said, but those inside should take basic safety precautions.
The Coordination Council tried to solve Belarus’ political crisis in 2020 and later transformed into a proto-parliament, analysts say.
