Pro-government Communist Party has new leader

May 31, Pozirk. Siarhiej Syrankoŭ has been elected first secretary of the central committee of the Communist Party of Belarus, the party announced on its website.

The decision was made at the CPB congress on May 25.

Speaking at the congress, Syrankoŭ expressed his dissatisfaction with the results of the February elections: seven Communists became members of the House of Representatives and 307 more became members of local councils

“Personally, I think the results could have been much better,” he said. He called on the party to begin “serious, systematic work.”

Syrankoŭ, 40, was born in Krasnapolle (Mahiloŭ region). He studied English and German at Mahiloŭ State University and administration and ideology at the Academy of Public Administration.

He was chief specialist of the Krasnapolle District Executive Committee’s ideological department, first deputy head of the Mahiloŭ Regional Executive Committee’s education department and member of the regional council.

The former CPB leader, Alaksiej Sokał, was elected secretary of the party’s central committee.

Pro-government parties dominate parliament
