Investigative journalists on interstate wanted list

July 26, Pozirk. Three journalists from the Belarusian investigative project Biuro are on an interstate wanted list, Mediazona Belarus reported.
Alaksandar Jaraševič, Alaksiej Karpieka and Volha Alchimienka are in the Russian interior ministry’s criminal investigation database.
Biuro said on Telegram that it regards the criminal prosecution as revenge to its investigations and an attempt to exert pressure.
The project has investigated corruption, fraud, tax evasion, money laundering, sanctions evasion and human rights violations since December 2023.
It says its investigations have an impact, such as European politicians imposing sanctions and officials initiating inspections and opening criminal cases.
In January, a district court in Homiel labeled Biuro‘s website and social media as extremist content.
Since 2020, the government has cracked down hard on independent media.
According to the Belarusian Association of Journalists, 38 media workers are behind bars.
