Sachaščyk resigns as opposition cabinet’s security chief

August 1, Pozirk. Valeryj Sachaščyk has resigned as defense and national security representative from the opposition United Transitional Cabinet.
In a video message, the former commander of the Brest-based 38th Separate Guards Air Assault Brigade said that Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja did not understand specifics of his job, noting that the establishment of his office a few years ago was just politics of the moment.
The news comes five weeks after the resignation of Valery Kavaleŭski as foreign policy chief.
Cichanoŭskaja appointed Sachaščyk to her cabinet two years ago.
She described the cabinet as “a collective executive body that will work every day for the main goals.”
The goals include “protecting Belarus’ independence and sovereignty, representing national interests and implementing the country’s actual de-occupation,” she said.
She called on the cabinet to work on restoring constitutional law and order and implementing “decisions required to achieve democratic change.”
The cabinet will work to oust Alaksandr Łukašenka from power, ensure transition from dictatorship to democracy, create conditions for free and fair elections and free all political prisoners, she added.
