Denmark earmarks €670,000 to support Belarusian reprisal victims
October 29, Pozirk. Denmark will allocate five million kroner (about €670,000) to support victims of politically-motivated reprisals in Belarus, opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has said, citing Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
The politicians are expected to meet in Iceland’s Reykjavík, where the Cichanoŭskaja is on a four-day visit for the 2024 Session of the Nordic Council.
“We are very grateful to Denmark and all Nordic countries for their solidarity and support as thousands of people are held behind bars, while thousands of reprisal victims and their families require help, rehabilitation and treatment,” she said. “Your solidarity gives hope, energy and, most importantly, confidence that we are not alone in our plight.”
In late April, Cichanoŭskaja announced the launch of a fund for assistance to political prisoners, rallying the support of Nordic countries and collecting about €2 million.
Eight Belarusian NGOs and initiatives are helping reprisal victims via the fund that focuses on helping people inside Belarus.
