March 11, Pozirk. Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has met with Roberta Metsola, president of the European Parliament, to discuss ways to secure the release of Belarus’ political prisoners.

According to the Belarusian opposition leader’s press office, at today’s meeting in Strasbourg, Cichanoŭskaja shared conclusions by the Viasna Human Rights Center on the mistreatment of women in detention.

She stressed the importance of active cooperation between the pro-democracy forces and European institutions. The politicians talked about involving more Belarusian democratic activists in European Parliament events.

The opposition leader also noted the importance of supporting independent journalists and human rights initiatives.

The meeting was attended by Palina Šarenda-Panasiuk, an activist who gained Metsola’s patronage while serving her prison sentence.

Earlier the same day, Cichanoŭskaja participated in a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

She suggested that the withdrawal of Russian troops and nuclear weapons from Belarus should be part of a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.

“As you discuss rearming Europe, I urge you to see support for Belarus as an investment in your own security. Belarus is key to stopping Russia’s advance into Europe. Without a free and independent Belarus, the threat of war will not end—not for Ukraine, not for Europe,” she said.
