EU tariffs on agricultural imports from Belarus, Russia take effect on July 1
June 12, Pozirk. The European Union’s new tariffs on Russian and Belarusian agricultural goods and fertilizers take effect on July 1, said the EU Council.
EU tariffs on agricultural products from Russia and Belarus that were not yet subject to extra customs duties will rise by 50 percent.
The legislation provides for a 6.5-percent tariff on fertilizers imported from Russia and Belarus, plus duties of between €40 and €45 per ton for the 2025-2026 period. These tariffs will rise to €430 per ton by 2028.
“In addition to weakening Russia’s war economy, the new tariffs will help reduce the EU’s dependence on Russia and Belarus, and will boost diversification and domestic production,” the Council said.
Germany alone has imported more than €1.3 million worth of nitrogen fertilizers from Belarus since the beginning of 2025, Deutsche Welle reported in late May, citing the German agriculture ministry.
The deliveries of nitrogen fertilizers from Belarus to Germany have risen by a factor of 120 since 2022.
Belarusian companies accounted for almost 7 percent of the Polish mineral fertilizer market in the first half of 2024.
