Belarus backs Maduro, denounces drug trafficking allegations
August 27, Pozirk. The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned “aggressive actions aimed at creating a tense international situation in the Caribbean and in Latin America as a whole,” three weeks after the United States doubled a reward for information leading to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to $50 million.
Minsk’s statement emphasized that Belarus “consistently advocates international cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.”
“We consider unsubstantiated and politically motivated accusations against sovereign states—particularly the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and its leadership—of supporting terrorism and trafficking drugs to be unacceptable,” the statement said.
The foreign ministry called on all parties to adhere to the UN Charter, refrain from the threat of force and not interfere in nations’ internal affairs.
“The Republic of Belarus confirms its support for the legitimately elected president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and the country’s government. We consistently advocate for the preservation of its sovereignty, independence and stability,” the statement said.
In early August, the US Department of Justice and Department of State announced a $50 million reward for information that could lead to Maduro’s arrest. US Attorney General Pam Bondi called Maduro one of the world’s biggest drug traffickers and a national security threat.
