Opposition leader grateful for Norway’s support for Belarusian people

May 17, Pozirk. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has acknowledged Norway’s support for the Belarusian people in their struggle for freedom and democracy in her congratulatory message on Norway’s Constitution Day.

“Today, we celebrate a country that stands firmly for freedom and human dignity — values that unite Norwegians and Belarusians,” she said on X.

Alaksandar Łukašenka’s message stressed readiness for an “open dialogue” with Oslo, noting a “great potential for resuming constructive cooperation.”

Cichanoŭskaja visited Norway several times, most recently in December 2025. Earlier that year, the Conservative Party of Norway awarded her the Sjur Lindebrække Memorial Prize for the promotion of democracy and human rights.

The Norwegian government has consistently refused to recognize Łukašenka as Belarus’s legitimate leader and backed the country’s pro-democracy forces. Oslo has also repeatedly aligned with European Union sanctions imposed on the regime in Minsk regime. Belarusian authorities added Norway to their list of “unfriendly” countries.
