Soon we will do what we and Russia need – Lukašenka on the recognition of the DPR and LPR
February 24, BPN. The issue of recognizing the independence of the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR is on the agenda of Belarus, Aliaksandr Lukašenka said on February 24.
“Soon we will do what we and Russia need,” Pul Pervogo, a Telegram channel close to Lukašenka’s press service quoted him.
On the evening of February 21, after an hour-long TV address, Russian president Vladimir Putin announced the recognition of the independence of the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics, breakaway Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk not controlled by Kyiv.
A few days earlier, Lukašenka said that he intended to make a decision on the recognition of the DPR and LPR together with Putin. “We will agree with Putin on what we should do to make things better for Russia and for Belarus. It will be a joint decision,” he said.
In the early morning of February 24, Vladimir Putin announced the start of a “military operation” in Ukraine after the appeal of the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics with a request to “provide assistance in repelling Kyiv’s aggression.” He stated that the Russian Federation was striving for the “demilitarization and denazification” of Ukraine.
