Over 130 people apply for membership in opposition’s Coordination Council

November 21, BPN. The Coordination Council has told BPN that it is processing 134 applications for membership.

There are 115 seats in the council. It received over 150 applications, but has already filtered out some citing technicalities and breaches of procedure.

The Belarusian opposition’s representative body emerged in August 2020 to deal with the political crisis that followed Alaksandr Łukašenka’s disputed re-election.

Its members included Nobel Prize-winning writer Śviatłana Aleksijevič, former Culture Minister Pavieł Łatuška and presidential hopeful Viktar Babaryka’s campaign manager Maryja Kaleśnikava, among others.

On October 27, 2022 activists announced a major reform of the council.

The revived Coordination Council is expected to hold its first meeting by December 16.
