Opposition says no legal obstacles for bringing Łukašenka to justice
January 20, BPN. There are no legal obstacles for bringing Alaksandr Łukašenka to justice, the opposition’s foreign secretary Valer Kavaleŭski has said.
He was commenting on the European Parliament’s January 19 resolution that called for an international tribunal to hold the Russian and Belarusian leaders accountable for the aggression against Ukraine.
“The issue of Łukašenka’s and the regime members’ accountability for crimes against humanity in respect to Belarusians has been the democratic forces’ and the United Transition Cabinet’s priority since the beginning,” he said, as quoted by the opposition’s press office. “Łukašenka does not have international immunity because he is not the legitimate president.”
Kavaleŭski stressed that since Russia invaded Ukraine, Łukašenka and the regime members have been involved in war crimes. “We welcome the European Parliament’s resolution,” he said.
He added that the opposition will continue to work with international partners to make sure the tribunal takes place. “This important step demonstrates that the European Union’s main legislative body has a consolidated position on Łukašenka’s role in the war,” he said.
