Police say dead migrant found near Polish border

January 31, BPN. Belarusian law enforcers found the body of “a refugee of Arab nationality” in the Pružany district, Brest region, near the Polish border, the Investigative Committee’s press office reported.

A team of investigators and forensic experts have already inspected the scene and are trying to establish the exact cause of death, it noted. The deceased reportedly had no personal belongings or documents.

Border authorities said that they found seven dead migrants at the Belarusian-Polish border in 2022.

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border dates back to the spring of 2021. It escalated on November 8, 2021 when thousands of migrants set up a camp near the Polish border.

The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian border guards of herding migrants across the border. They charged Minsk with engineering the migration crisis that they see as a hybrid attack on the European Union.

Migration figures had dropped significantly by the time Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, but have risen more recently.
