Russia to withdraw some 2,000 troops from Belarus – Ukraine’s border guards

April 6, BPN. The number of Russian servicemen training in Belarus will soon drop by 50 percent to 2,000, Andriy Demchenko, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service, told journalists on April 5.

Russian troops that have completed training in Belarus are about to withdraw to Russia to be deployed in Ukraine later, he noted.

The official described the situation in the Belarusian direction as “fully under control.” Ukrainian intelligence did not record the formation of an attack group for a potential invasion of Ukraine, he added.

Ukraine keeps stepping up border protection even though the number of Belarusian troops at the Belarus-Ukraine border and the nature of their actions remain unchanged, Demchenko said, noting the danger of provocations.

In February 2022, Russia started a full-scale war against Ukraine. Alaksandr Łukašenka admitted that Belarus participated in Russia’s war on Ukraine, but said it was “not killing anyone.”

Authorities in Minsk denied Belarusian army troops’ involvement in combat operations on the Russian side. However, Belarus allowed Russian troops and weapons to move freely through the country, use its airspace, refuel and store military equipment and attack Ukraine from its territory.
