Cichanoŭskaja discusses thorny issues at European Political Community summit
July 18, Pozirk. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has discussed “issues that are painful to Belarusians” at the European Political Community (EPC) summit in the United Kingdom.
In a video posted to Telegram, she said the event had brought together the leaders of 46 countries, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Cichanoŭskaja said she had talked about political prisoners, a new humanitarian foundation, the recent closure of European Union (EU) borders to cars with Belarusian license plates, a European future for Belarus, help to Belarusians in exile, especially with their legalization and ways to pull Belarus out of the war.
The EPC held the summit at Blenheim Palace, where British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was born. Cichanoŭskaja said that his name “symbolizes determination.”
“I hope that Europe will be resolute in supporting Belarus and Ukraine,” she said.
The EPC was formed at the initiative of Macron several months after Russia began its full-scale war in Ukraine as an intergovernmental forum to discuss Europe’s future.
It comprises 27 European Union and 20 other countries, such as Albania and Ukraine.
