Opposition politician: four Belarusians who fought Russia in Ukraine captured by KGB

December 2, Pozirk. Four former Kastuś Kalinoŭski Regiment volunteer fighters are held at the Committee for State Security’s detention center in Minsk, Viačasłaŭ Siŭčyk, leader of the Razam solidarity movement, told participants at a Belarusian rally in Warsaw yesterday.

The arrests of Vasil Vieramiejčyk and Maksim Ralko were reported on November 20, while the names of the other two captured volunteers remain unknown.

Vieramiejčyk was deported from Vietnam after Lithuania denied him asylum, citing national security concerns. Rights groups declared him a political prisoner.

The case demonstrates that both Ukraine and Lithuania treat Belarusians as outcasts, Siŭčyk said. “The propaganda has made Belarusians guilty,” the politician noted. “This has been going on for three years. There are already a lot of different stories that happened to Belarusians in Ukraine.”

Minsk considers the Kastuś Kalinoŭski Regiment a terrorist group and its fighters may face death sentences if convicted.
