Babrujski Kurjer former editor sentenced to 15 days in jail

April 1, Pozirk. Anatol Sanacienka, former editor in chief of the privately-owned Babrujski Kurjer newspaper in Babrujsk, has been sentenced to 15 days in jail, the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) reported.
The district court issued the sentence on March 31, presumably finding the journalist guilty of sharing banned content. The charge has been extensively used by police to punish Belarusians for reading news sources critical of the government.
Police arrested him on March 28, and also searched the house of Vital Sanacienka, Anatol’s nephew and the defunct paper’s former owner.
In 2022, the journalist spent 30 days at Babarujsk’s detention center for allegedly spreading banned content.
The government has cracked down on independent media since 2020, often forcing newsrooms into exile. Since November 2021, authorities have designated nearly 40 media outlets as “extremist groups.”
