Cuban president arrives in Minsk

June 25, Pozirk. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel is on an official visit in Minsk and is expected to hold talks with Alaksandar Łukašenka later today, according to the press office of the Belarusian ruler.
Cuba’s Cubadebate said Díaz-Canel will attend a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in the Belarusian capital on June 27. Cuba has an observer status at the Eurasian Economic Union.
The website said it is the president’s second visit to Minsk. The first one was in October 2019. It also highlighted Belarus’ solidarity in opposing the US “economic, trade and financial blockade of Cuba.”
In an interview with the Cuban president’s website, diplomat Alejandro Simancas Marin said biopharmaceuticals and agricultural equipment are the main goods in mutual trade. Cuba has used Belarusian tractors for more than 50 years and has an assembly plant, he said.
Yesterday, Minsk announced that Díaz-Canel will visit Belarusian machine-building and pharmaceutical companies and attend the Eurasian Economic Forum on June 26 and a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council on June 27.
Cuba brands itself as a socialist republic. It is run exclusively by Partido Comunista de Cuba (PCC), which persecutes the opposition.
In May, the Cuban-Belarusian commission on trade and economic cooperation held a meeting in Havana.
