Belarus’ top diplomat in Algeria to promote trade
October 24, Pozirk. Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ryžankoŭ, currently on a visit to Algeria, stressed the need to boost bilateral trade as he met Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, Algerian minister of agriculture, rural development and fisheries, yesterday.
Oualid was interested in supplies of baby formula, dry milk and halal-certified meat, the Belarusian foreign ministry reported, noting that the governments plan to sign a veterinary agreement and a memorandum of cooperation in agriculture.
Ryžankoŭ promoted Belarusian agricultural equipment, stressing that Belarus, with its extensive experience in the sector, is ready to contribute to Algeria’s food security. Oualid was reportedly interested in continued cooperation on grain storage systems construction.
The Belarusian delegation also held expert group consultations on cooperation in industry, agriculture and business and negotiated a visit to Algeria for top Belarusian executives from state-run equipment manufacturers.
Belarus and Algeria established diplomatic relations in 1995.
In 2021, trade between the two countries amounted to $1.01 million, dominated by Belarusian exports of potash fertilizers, stationery and textiles, according to the Belarusian embassy to Egypt responsible for relations with Algeria. Data for the following years is not publicly available.
