Astraviec NPP disconnects power unit from grid

April 27, Pozirk. The first power unit of the Astraviec Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) has been disconnected from the grid for preventive maintenance of the equipment, the plant’s press office reports without disclosing any further details.

Background radiation levels in the area surrounding the plant remain unchanged, and work is currently underway to ensure the reliable operation of the power unit, it noted.

Located near Astraviec, Hrodna region, some 10 miles away from the Lithuanian border, the Belarusian NPP has been designed by Russia’s Rosatom and built with a Russian loan. Units 1 and 2 started commercial operation in June 2021 and November 2023, respectively.

Lithuania views the plant as unsafe and describes it as a “geopolitical weapon.”

The Belarusian government plans to build a third unit and connect it to the grid between 2035 and 2038.
