Former presidential hopeful to be tried in absentia on 12 criminal charges

December 19, BPN. Authorities started special proceedings against Valeryj Capkała, former presidential hopeful and ex-diplomat, the Investigative Committee’s website said.

Capkała who fled Belarus for fear of arrest faces a number of criminal charges. These include creating and running an extremist group, discrediting Belarus, taking bribes, inciting hatred and insulting Alaksandr Łukašenka.

Trials in absentia in the so-called special proceedings target those living abroad and evading contact with investigators. The authorities’ ultimate goal in the process is to strip dissidents of their Belarusian citizenship. Amendments listing 34 offenses and allowing for investigations and trials in absentia came into effect on July 27.

To date, Belarusian authorities have opened special proceedings against at least 19 persons.
