Estonian foreign minister advocates stronger sanctions against Łukašenka’s regime
January 11, BPN. The international community should impose more sanctions on Alaksandr Łukašenka’s regime and prevent their circumvention, Estonia’s Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu told participants in a webinar on Belarusian opposition’s strategies for 2023.
Sanctions should be applied simultaneously to Russia and Belarus, he stressed.
Reinsalu noted that Belarus’ democratization hinges on the outcome of Russia’s war on Ukraine, noting that Łukašenka uses the country as a puppet of the Kremlin.
The EU countries need to engage in a dialogue with the Belarusian opposition and plan for the restoration of the country, he added.
He stressed that the international community must document crimes against humanity committed by the Belarusian regime to be able to bring officials to justice.
