Homiel chemical plant keeps supplying fertilizers to European markets – CEO
January 12, BPN. The Homiel Chemical Plant continues to supply fertilizers to European markets, Vestnik Belneftekhima reported citing its CEO Dźmitryj Čarniakoŭ.
The plant increased production of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers for European markets after potassium-containing products came under Western sanctions, he said. The plant had produced nitrogen and phosphorus crop nutrients “in insignificant quantities and for domestic consumers,” he noted.
Čarniakoŭ admitted difficulties with payments but stressed “flexible production schemes” that allowed the plant to adapt quickly to the new conditions and maintain its presence in Europe.
Exports of mineral fertilizers to Asia and South America remain unprofitable because of high delivery costs, he said, but noted that the plant started selling its products in Libya, China and other countries.
In 2021, the European Union, United States, UK and Canada imposed sanctions on Belarusian potash giant Belaruskali. In January 2022, Yara, a Norwegian chemical company, suspended cooperation with Belaruskali because of Western sanctions. On February 1, Lithuania halted shipments of Belarusian potash fertilizers through the Port of Klaipėda.
