Courts impose $77 million in fines, damages in 2022

January 17, BPN. The Prosecutor General’s Office has said that courts imposed 201.4 million rubels ($76.87 million at the National Bank’s average annual exchange rate) in fines and damages in 2022, a 38 percent increase from 2021. Bailiffs collected 1.7 billion rubels ($648.85 million; a 16.6 percent rise in rubels from 2021) in fines and damages last year.

The government also profited from politically motivated convictions. The Viasna Human Rights Center has data on 1,242 convictions delivered last year in politically motivated cases. More than 150 convicts were ordered to pay nearly 1.3 million rubels in penalties.
