Putin pushes for deeper political integration within EAEU

January 23, BPN. Close integration in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) has become a “worthy response” to global issues exacerbated by the pandemic and Western sanctions, Russian President Vladimir Putin told the EAEU leaders.

On January 1 Russia took over the rotating presidency of the EAEU Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, Eurasian Intergovernmental Council and Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission.

Russia’s tenure will focus on further deepening regional integration in the political, economic, industrial, financial and technological areas. Development of technological potential and self-sufficiency should be strategic priorities, Putin noted.

The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is an international organization for regional economic integration. Its member states include Belarus and Russia, which are under international sanctions for the assault on Ukraine, as well as Armenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Cuba, Moldova, and Uzbekistan have observer status. Vietnam, Serbia, and Singapore have signed free trade agreements with the EAEU.
