Canada reaffirms support for democratic Belarus
February 8, BPN. Catherine Godin, the Canadian envoy to Poland, met with opposition leader Sviatłana Cichanoŭskaja in Vilnius on February 7 to reaffirm Canada’s support for civil society, human rights and democracy in Belarus.
Cichanoŭskaja thanked Canada for supporting Belarus’ democratic movement and condemning human rights abuses, the Canadian Embassy in Poland tweeted.
Belarus’ opposition leader visited Canada in November 2022 and had a number of high-level meetings, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly.
At the time of her visit, Canada sanctioned 22 Belarusian officials involved in the deployment and transportation of Russian soldiers and equipment to Ukraine as well as 16 companies from the military-industrial, engineering, and banking sectors.
