Language champion deplores state of Belarusian on Mother Language Day

February 21, BPN. The official status of the Belarusian language “ensures state independence as well,” Alena Anisim, ex-head of the outlawed Belarusian Language Society, told BPN on the occasion of International Mother Language Day.

Yet, despite its official status, only few classes and schools provide instruction in Belarusian, Anisim said. She also noted the limited use of Belarusian in rural schools, attributing it to poor training of teachers.

Foreign movies are not dubbed in Belarusian and there are no universities that use Belarusian as the language of instruction, Anisim said. At least half of the schools should switch to Belarusian to create more favorable conditions, she stressed.
