Poll: Most young Belarusians reject Russia’s assault on Ukraine

July 28, BPN. A new online poll shows that most young city dwellers in Belarus do not back Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine.

Chatham House’s Belarus Initiative surveyed 683 Belarusians aged 18-35 one month ago, and released the results today.

Only six percent of respondents said they strongly support Russia’s actions in Ukraine, while 12 percent said they somewhat support them.

On the other hand, 34 percent said they strongly oppose the Russian aggression, and 16 percent said they somewhat oppose it. A third of respondents said they were unsure about their stance on the war.

The pollster also asked about Belarus’ future security alignment. Nearly half of respondents, 47 percent, said Belarus should leave the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and declare neutrality. Forty-one percent said Belarus should stay in the CSTO. Just 12 percent said Belarus should join NATO.
