Belarus’ FM to head delegation to UN high-level week in September

July 30, BPN. Foreign Minister Siarhiej Alejnik will head the official delegation representing Belarus at the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week scheduled for September in New York, Belarusian UN ambassador Valancin Rybakoŭ told Belarus 1 TV channel.

“The high-level week starts on September 19,” he said. “There will be a large number of bilateral meetings as well as meetings with the [UN] secretariat.”

In mid-May, pro-government media reported that UN Secretary-General António Guterres invited Alaksandar Łukašenka to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) summit in New York. Łukašenka has not confirmed his attendance, but said that Belarus would be represented “at a worthy level.”

The opposition said that the invitation for Łukašenka to the UN did not legitimize him as Belarus’ leader.
