Belarusian MP Ananič claims West waging “mental war” against Belarus
March 1, Pozirk. Belarusian legislation should be amended to protect “the values of the Belarusian state, the institution of family and traditional values,” said MP Lilija Ananič in her Telegram channel.
Ananič, a former information minister serving the deputy chairwoman of the parliamentary standing committee on human rights, ethnic relations and media, delivered her speech on February 29 at Management Academy under the President.
Patriotic education should counteract “the mental war waged against Belarus by the collective West and aimed at destroying the state foundations,” she said.
Since February 2021, Ananič has headed a national commission that advises what products should be branded as extremist.
Based on the commission’s advice, courts have banned many works of literature, music and art, including poems by Belarusian classic Vincent Dunin-Marcynkievič, a novel by contemporary writer Alhierd Baharevič and songs by the punk rockers Day Darogu!.
She was elected as an MP in 2019 but did not run for re-election in 2024.
On February 9, Prosecutor General Andrej Švied said prosecutors had drafted a bill to prohibit the propaganda of “abnormal relationships, pedophilia and voluntary refusal to have children.”
Those breaking the law, of adopted, would face punishment under the Administrative Offenses Code, an informed opposition source said.
Russia banned “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations and (or) preferences” among minors back in 2013. In 2022, it expanded the ban to cover the whole population. Those found guilty of breaking it face fines.
