Belarus’ road to Europe runs through Strasbourg – Cichanoŭskaja, CoE head say in joint article

March 6, Pozirk. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has written a joint article with Marija Pejčinović Burić, secretary general of the Council of Europe, to support Belarusians’ European aspirations.
“For the people of Belarus, the road to Europe runs through Strasbourg,” they stressed. “The Council of Europe is key for the democratic future of their country.”
Europe transcended geographical definitions and evolved as a community based on human rights, democracy and the rule of law, the politicians stressed.
“The best future for Belarus is a truly European one, marked by a commitment to the values that define our modern continent, centred on the European Convention on Human Rights, which remains our golden standard,” the article reads.
“Walking the path to that democratic future, integrated into the European community and, ultimately, its institutions, requires courage, resilience, and international solidarity,” it says, noting that Belarusians deserve the “stability, prosperity and freedom that come with it.”
Cichanoŭskaja has already published joint articles with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė and European Parliament’s President Roberta Metsola.
