May 29, Pozirk. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has called on Belarusians not to lose faith in “truth and justice which will defeat evil and lawlessness,” says her video address marking four years since the arrest of her husband Siarhiej Cichanoŭski.

“I don’t know exactly where he is, in what condition and what is happening to him,” the politician said. Her husband’s fate behind bars remains unknown as Belarusian authorities hold him incommunicado to “silence his voice,” she noted.

Cichanoŭski, a former presidential hopeful, was among the first people listed as political prisoners in Belarus during the 2020 election campaign.

He was arrested at a rally in Hrodna four years ago.

In December 2021, he was given 18 years in prison after being convicted of interfering in elections, inciting hatred and organizing mass riots.

His family and lawyers have not heard from him for more than one year.
