Ukrainian pundit says export of democracy to Belarus not possible

August 23, BPN. Yevgen Magda, political scientist and director of the World Policy Institute, has expressed doubt that Belarus’ national volunteer forces can overthrow Alaksandr Łukašenka’s regime, a goal that Belarusian volunteers have declared.

Two Belarusian volunteer regiments currently fight Russia in the Ukrainian Armed Forces – the Kastuś Kalinoŭski Regiment and the Pahonia Regiment.

Magda is skeptical that any of them can enter Belarus from Ukraine. “Belarusians must to do it themselves [overthrow the regime],” Magda told BPN in an interview on the occasion of six months since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

According to him, Ukraine is unlikely to interfere in the internal affairs of Belarus as the military conflict continues.

However, he stressed that “there will be no safe Europe without democratic Belarus.” He added that Łukašenka “proved to be a loyal Putin’s ally, for which he will be held accountable.”

“Ukraine seeks to win the war, among other things, so that Russia will not remain in its present form. Otherwise, it will continue to be a threat. Once Russia is defeated, it may affect the situation in Belarus as well,” Magda concluded.

The full version of the interview will be available in Russian and Belarusian on our website, as well as on Pozіrk. Naviny pra Belarus pages on Telegram and Facebook.
