Latvia to discuss termination of cross-border cooperation with Belarus

August 28, BPN. On August 30, Latvia’s government plans to discuss termination of a cross-border cooperation agreement with Belarus because of official Minsk’s support of Russia’s war against Ukraine, Latvia’s LETA reported.

The agreement was signed and entered into force back in 1998 with the aim to promote cross-border cooperation between the two countries on the local level. It was originally signed for 10 years, with an automatic extension for another five years unless either party wanted to terminate it.

The Latvian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development was considering a temporary suspension of the agreement, but noted that it could lead to “a legally ambiguous situation,” as the current five-year term expires only in July 2023.
