European human rights defenders urge Belarusian honorary consuls in Switzerland, Liechtenstein to resign
August 29, BPN. Human rights and civil society groups have urged Belarusian honorary consuls to resign over human rights abuses by the Belarusian government.
Hermann Alexander Beyeler and Andrey Nazheskin, the Belarusian honorary consuls in Switzerland, as well as Timothy von Landskron in Liechtenstein should resign and stop representing Alaksandr Łukašenka’s regime, reads the open letter signed by 12 European civil society organizations at the initiative of Libereco, a German-Swiss human rights organization.
Human rights defenders stress that Łukašenka is responsible “for thousands of human rights violations” in Belarus and supports Russia’s war against Ukraine in violation of the international law and leading to tens of thousands of deaths.
The appeal also notes that he “allowed Russian troops to invade Ukraine from Belarusian territory,” while Ukraine is regularly attacked by missiles launched from Belarus.
