Mikhail Gorbachev made big contribution to international détente, Łukašenka says

August 31, BPN. Alaksandr Łukašenka has offered his condolences to the family of last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who died on August 30 at the age of 91.

“I was saddened by the news that Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, whose life was tightly connected to our Motherland’s fate, had died. Mikhail Sergeyevich made a big personal contribution to the easing of international tension and global nuclear disarmament at the end of the 20th century,” Łukašenka said, as quoted by his press office on August 31.

“He sincerely believed that it was possible to reorganize society on the principles of glasnost, people power and openness,” he added.

Łukašenka has repeatedly called the collapse of the USSR, which was largely triggered by Gorbachev’s policies, a disaster.
