Łukašenka notes similarity between Belarus, North Korea

September 9, BPN. The fates of Belarusians and North Koreans who made sacrifices for independence of their countries have historical similarities, Alaksandr Łukašenka said in his message to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Day of the Foundation of the Republic.

According to Łukašenka, the relationship between Minsk and Pyongyang is based on “friendship, trust and mutual respect.” He also noted that both countries could expand bilateral cooperation “for the benefit of the present and future generations.”

Diplomatic relations between Belarus and North Korea were established back in 1992. In 2016, North Korea opened an embassy in Minsk.

No data on mutual trade is available in open sources. According to Belorusy i Rynok, Belarus sold no goods to North Korea in 2021, while imports amounted to $3,700 and consisted mostly of medical supplies, gauze and bandages.

In 2006-2021, Belarusian exports to North Korea peaked at $3.75 million in 2010, plummeting to $2,000 in 2020.
