Lithuanian Railways tightens controls to prevent sanctions evasion

March 1, BPN. LTG Cargo, a subsidiary of the Lithuanian Railways, will be asking all its broad-gauge customers to provide additional documents and information about the cargo starting on March 1, its website says.

LTG Cargo has already amended its procedures and is carrying out a particularly detailed inspection of cargo from Belarus as well as from other countries, said its CEO Eglė Šimė.

It keeps cooperating with the agencies responsible for sanctions control to prevent any attempts to circumvent them, she stressed.

The company may deny the shipment of goods in case of suspected sanctions evasion or lack of additional information, it noted.

Lithuania is investigating the smuggling of fertilizers produced by Hrodna Azot, a Belarusian company under EU sanctions.

In the last few years, democratic countries have imposed sanctions against a number of Belarusian individuals and companies over human rights abuses and the country’s complicity in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
